In September 2020 we released our latest WealthTech Views report, this time looking at how Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and Blockchain will shape the future of the wealth & asset management industry. The report was created in partnership with Dr Efi Pylarinou, the Fintech global influencer and thought leader, and consists of articles from 2 thought leaders and 10 solution providers from across the globe where they provide their perspective on DLT & Blockchain in the sector and also outline the solutions they offer in this area that wealth managers should consider. The companies who provided their views were Ark Invest, the Multichain Asset Managers Association (‘MAMA’), area2invest, Chainalysis, Consensys, CrescoFin, DSENT, FiCAS, FundsDLT, Lykke, SEBA Bank and Securrency.

The report was created because the wealth and asset management sector continues to face challenges due to the unstoppable digitalization that is threatening traditional business models in finance. All the 4th Industrial Revolution (‘4IR’) technologies (e.g. Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, Chatbots, Big Data analytics, APIs and Blockchain) are threats but also present opportunities to wealth and asset managers and are being integrated, adopted, or piloted. The genuinely disruptive one, however, is clearly Blockchain, as it has the potential to fundamentally change wealth and asset management, both by replacing the infrastructure in the management of existing asset classes and as the backbone for new alternative assets.

As this is our first report on this topic it is by no means covering all the activity in the area as the space is evolving fast, with some subsectors maturing (e.g. custody), and other nascent ones emerging (e.g. DeFi – Decentralized Finance). Given the level of innovation in this area we therefore plan to publish updates and/or sequels to this report on an on-going basis and will make this an annual WealthTech Views report for the sector.
