Institutional investors point to diversification as the primary reason for investing in alternative assets. In light of this, we show in this paper different ways that investors can evaluate the diversification benefits of different alternative asset classes. In this paper, we show how looking at the performance of different assets in a particular market or economic environment might shine a light on which alternatives provide diversification when it is needed most.
