For this edition of WealthTech Talks, we spoke with Sanjay Kulkarni, Chief Revenue Officer at Croesus, one of Canada’s leading wealth technology providers. In this conversation, Kulkarni shares his perspective on the evolution of wealth technology in Canada, the growing expectations of advisors, and why Croesus is focused on redefining what innovation looks like in wealth management.
1. Could you introduce your business by sharing who you are, when it was founded, and what you do?
Croesus is one of Canada's leading WealthTech companies, helping shape the future of wealth management for nearly four decades. Headquartered in Laval, Québec, we partner with over 100 of the country's leading financial institutions, independent wealth management firms, and portfolio managers, delivering the technology that enables advisors to serve clients with greater confidence, insight, and efficiency.
Today, Croesus supports the management of more than C$2.3 trillion (US$1.62 trillion) in assets, a reflection of the trust placed in our platform by over 100 of the industry's most respected organizations and 20,000 users. That scale, combined with nearly four decades of deep wealth management expertise, gives us a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing advisors and firms as the industry continues to evolve.
Our portfolio management, reporting, analytics, and client engagement solutions help firms simplify complexity, streamline operations, and create capacity for advisors to focus on what matters most: building stronger client relationships and growing their practice. Increasingly, our focus extends beyond operational excellence to enabling sustainable business growth through intelligent automation, AI-powered innovation, and advisor-first experiences.
Innovation has always been at the heart of Croesus. Recognized through multiple industry awards for product excellence, workplace culture, and innovation, we continue to invest in technologies that anticipate where wealth management is heading – not simply where it is today. From conversational AI and personalized client communications to next-generation portfolio intelligence, we're helping redefine how advice is delivered in an increasingly digital world.
What distinguishes Croesus is our ability to combine trust with continuous innovation. In an industry where security, data integrity, and regulatory compliance are table stakes, we are equally focused on helping firms prepare for what's next. We believe the future of wealth management belongs to organizations that empower advisors with smarter technology, deeper insights, and more meaningful client interactions.
Our mission has remained remarkably consistent since 1987: to help wealth management firms grow by enabling advisors to deliver exceptional advice and better investor outcomes. The technology has evolved dramatically over that time. Our purpose has not.
2. How has the firm evolved over its history, and what major milestones have been achieved?
Croesus has evolved alongside the wealth management industry itself.
We began at a time when portfolio management technology was largely focused on recordkeeping, reconciliation, and reporting. Over the years, as advisory models became more sophisticated and client expectations increased, the role of technology expanded dramatically. Portfolio management systems are no longer simply systems of record; they are increasingly central to how advice is delivered, differentiated, and scaled.
That evolution has shaped Croesus’ journey. We have continuously expanded our capabilities – from core portfolio accounting and reporting to complex portfolio handling and rebalancing, digital engagement, and AI-enabled communication.
One milestone we are particularly proud of is our continued recognition as a trusted partner to Canadian wealth management firms. Trust remains one of our strongest market attributes. At the same time, we are entering an important new chapter. We are deliberately evolving market perception of Croesus from a highly trusted and reliable incumbent to something more expansive: a trusted innovator.
That shift is strategic. The market increasingly expects more than reliability alone, and we believe Croesus is uniquely positioned to meet that moment.
3. Where does the firm stand now in terms of size, client base, geographic focus, and solution offerings? What main market issues are shaping the business?
Today, Croesus serves a broad spectrum of wealth management organizations across Canada, ranging from large enterprises to sophisticated independent firms. While Canada remains our core market, we increasingly see our relevance extending into other wealth management markets, and are continuously evaluating strategic opportunities for expansion.
What is most interesting to us right now is not simply market growth, but market transition.
We recently completed a brand perception audit involving 378 licensed Canadian investment advisors, and the findings were revealing. Advisors are becoming significantly more demanding in what they expect from wealth technology.
- 71% percent told us that the ability to manage large historical data volumes is very or extremely important
- 70% prioritized flexible and customizable reporting
- While 69% identified support for complex portfolio structures as essential
Those numbers tell a bigger story.
Canadian advisors are managing more complexity than ever before. They are dealing with larger books, more sophisticated households, growing compliance demands, and increasingly personalized client expectations. Technology is no longer evaluated simply on whether it works. It is increasingly judged on whether it helps advisors compete.
At the same time, our research uncovered an important industry-wide challenge: a significant usability gap. Advisors told us they expect portfolio technology to score 56 out of 100 on ease of use, yet their actual experience averages only 41. That 15-point gap is one of the clearest signals that the industry still has meaningful work to do.
For Croesus, that gap represents both challenge and significant opportunity, given portfolio management systems are at the core of any advisory business.
4. How did the firm’s focus on the wealth management sector develop, and how have you evolved in serving this financial service area?
Croesus has always been deeply rooted in wealth management because it is an industry where technology has an unusually direct impact on human outcomes.
In many sectors, technology improves efficiency. In wealth management, technology shapes trust, decision quality, and ultimately the client relationship itself. That has always made this space compelling for us.
Over time, we have seen the advisor role evolve dramatically. Advisors today are expected to be portfolio managers, planners, educators, behavioral coaches, and relationship builders – often all at once. That evolution has required technology providers to rethink what support really means.
Historically, serving wealth management meant delivering robust operational tools. Today, it increasingly means helping advisors navigate complexity while creating capacity for more meaningful client engagement.
This shift has strongly influenced our product strategy. Increasingly, we are focused not just on workflow efficiency but on intelligence amplification - helping advisors turn data into insight and insight into action.
That philosophy sits behind innovations such as Vidia, our video communication solution, which helps advisors communicate portfolio performance and market context to clients in more intuitive, engaging ways. It reflects our belief that communication itself is becoming a strategic differentiator in wealth management.
5. Specifically, regarding the wealth management sector, what is your business’s current focus? What market insights are you hearing, and how are you addressing the needs and relevant topics for wealth managers?
The clearest message we hear from the market is that advisors need support scaling high-quality advice without sacrificing personalization. That tension defines much of modern wealth management.
Advisors want to deepen client relationships, deliver more personalized guidance, and operate more proactively. Yet they are constrained by time, operational complexity, and growing information overload. The challenge is no longer access to data; it is the ability to convert data into timely, relevant action. This is where we believe the next major wave of innovation will emerge.
Artificial intelligence is understandably dominating industry discussion, but we believe the most important role of AI in wealth management is not replacement – it is amplification. The most successful advisors of the future will not be those replaced by intelligent systems, but those empowered by them.
Technology should help advisors identify opportunities earlier, communicate more effectively, surface actionable insights, and spend more time where they create the most value: with clients.
Our brand perception research surfaced another important insight: despite a crowded vendor landscape, no provider clearly owns innovation leadership in Canadian portfolio management technology. We found a market rich in capability but poor in differentiation. We see that as a call to action.
Croesus is investing aggressively in the capabilities that matter most to the future of wealth management: advanced reporting, AI-enabled communication, usability, and intelligence-driven workflows.
But equally important, we are changing how we talk about ourselves. For years, the market has rightly viewed Croesus as trusted, reliable, and secure. Those remain core strengths. Our ambition now is to be equally recognized for innovation.
Ultimately, we believe the future of wealth technology belongs neither to pure disruptors nor to traditional incumbents. It belongs to trusted innovators. That is the space Croesus intends to lead.
