Solution introduction

Get a Risk Rating or full report on an artwork or collection. Our full reports include the scores, 24hr desktop risk-check and indication of lending potential, and vetted expert specialist examination of artworks

The Overstone Risk Rating powers all our products and services. We derive it from two score types:

  • Art Risk Monitor™ predicts liquidity, market depth and confidence of estimate in current conditions.
  • Qualitative Risk Monitor™ scores the potential future risks of an artwork by looking at the likelihood of Authenticity challenge and Condition deterioration.

The Overstone Risk Ratings drive loan-to-value, profit margin and insurance premium decisions, as well as being tools to optimise a collection’s management.

What makes Liquidity important?
Liquidity is a measure of an artwork’s realisable value.

Our ARM scores demonstrate the confidence to execute a sale at a certain value. We look at market depth – the number of bids in the auction room to achieve a price that is close to expectations – which then drives liquidity.

Therefore,

A less liquid work with a high valuation will leave one with less confidence that the sale can be executed at its expected price.

A very liquid work gives you high confidence that its expected price can be met if it were sold under current market conditions.

Our ratings
Our proprietary algorithms run on over 2.5 million artwork sale results, covering over 10,000 artists, and are constantly being updated. We guarantee our products and monitoring services employ the most current data sets available, giving you high precision results.

For best applications, we recommend using our ratings to look at :

  • Estate planning and intergenerational transfers of art collections
  • Optimising a collection for risk potential
  • Using art collections as collateral
