In the WealthTech Talks interview series, we interview executives from leading wealth management firms, solution providers, and WealthTech influencers to learn more about them, their journey, their perspectives on the market, and how they see the future of wealth management.

For this issue of WealthTech Talks, we caught up with Michele Leoncelli, Head of Wealth Management of Prometeia, a global provider of advisory services, technology solutions, and research for the financial industry. Since its origins as a university research spin-off, the company has combined deep financial expertise with proprietary data, advanced analytics, and software to help financial institutions make better decisions and manage increasingly complex challenges. Today, Prometeia supports more than 1,000 clients through an integrated model that brings together a combination of software, data, analytics, and specialist expertise.

In this interview, Leoncelli shared his insight into how financial institutions can deliver more personalised investment experiences while improving advisor productivity and maintaining strong governance. Leoncelli also shared his views on the role of embedded AI, integrated digital platforms, and international expansion in the next phase of wealth management.

1. Could you provide a brief introduction to your business?
Prometeia was founded to bring rigorous quantitative analysis and advanced technology to financial institutions. Over more than 50 years, the firm has evolved from a specialist in risk and financial modelling into an international provider of software, analytics, and advisory services. In wealth management, we help banks, private banks, asset managers, and advisory firms design and operate end-to-end investment and advisory processes, from client profiling and portfolio construction to advisor workspaces, digital engagement, and ongoing monitoring.

2. In the wealth management sector, what types of clients do you primarily work with and target?
We work primarily with banks, private banks, wealth managers, asset managers, and other financial institutions serving all segments from high-net-worth, private banking to mass-affluent clients. Our clients range from large international groups to specialised local players, with a strong presence across Europe and a growing international footprint. We support organisations at different stages of digital maturity, from firms modernising specific advisory processes to institutions seeking a fully integrated wealth management platform.

3. Why do your existing and target clients choose to work with you? What makes your solutions relevant and distinct from your competitors?
Clients choose Prometeia because we combine deep wealth management expertise with proven technology, quantitative capabilities, and the ability to support complex transformation programmes also involving regulation compliance. Our solutions are modular and can be integrated into existing architectures, allowing institutions to innovate without replacing every core system. Platforms such as our Digital Wealth Management Platform, Robo4, Advisor Coach, and Advisor Workspaces connect investment capabilities, client journeys, and advisor workflows in a governed environment. This helps firms deliver greater personalization, improve productivity, and scale engagement while maintaining control, explainability, and regulatory compliance.

4. What's next for your business? Can you share the firm's current focus and future plans, such as product development, market expansion, and strategic goals?
Our focus is on helping clients move from fragmented tools and isolated use cases to integrated, AI-enabled wealth management experiences. We are continuing to develop our platforms with embedded generative AI, advanced personalisation, and stronger orchestration across client, advisor, and investment workflows. At the same time, we are expanding our international presence, including Spain, Luxembourg, and other European and Middle Eastern markets, and strengthening partnerships that complement our capabilities in areas such as behavioural profiling and digital engagement. The strategic goal is to give financial institutions a flexible, scalable foundation for growth and innovation.

5. Based on your experience in the wealth management sector, what key opportunities and challenges do you foresee for firms today and in the next three years?
The main opportunity is to use data, analytics, and AI to make wealth management more personalised, proactive, and scalable. At the same time, clients themselves are increasingly using AI to inform their own decisions, which makes the banker's role more demanding: clients arrive with questions and arguments that can sound compelling but sometimes rest on a "sterile," purely AI-generated read of their own situation, disconnected from context, goals, or risk profile. This makes the advisor’s ability to interpret and contextualise information, challenge it where necessary, and apply professional judgement even more important. Within this context, firms can equip advisors with better insights, automate lower-value activities, and create more engaging digital journeys while preserving the human relationship that remains central to advice. The challenge is turning innovation into an operating model that works within existing architectures, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements. Over the next three years, the firms that progress fastest will be those that connect technology, investment expertise, and governance across the full client and advisor journey, rather than treating AI or digitalisation as standalone initiatives.
