The Fundraising and M&A (F&MA) category is the newest business need category within our Consulting & Research marketplace, added in response to the ongoing growth and development in fundraising and mergers and acquisitions across the wealth management sector and the supporting WealthTech arena. The category includes any business, whether advisory, banking and lending, consolidator, consulting, data and insights, investment (private equity, venture capital, etc.), or legal, and any other service provider that has an offering relevant to either wealth managers or WealthTechs in this sphere.

In terms of M&A across the sector, although deal volumes have dropped in the last few years from a high of US$78 billion in 2021, according to Bain, there is still significant activity across the asset and wealth management sectors as the industry adapts to the ongoing forces of change. This data will miss much of the smaller market M&A and, as any observer of the industry will be aware, the flow of these deals is daily and relentless.

There is significant and ongoing consolidation across the market. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the Financial Conduct Authority counted about 4,340 financial advice firms in 2024 (The Lang Cat). That is down from around 5,062 firms in 2022. Firms are, for a variety of reasons, looking to exit. M&A is one option, perhaps through the many private equity-backed consolidators that now exist. Meanwhile, in the United States, recent data from Cerulli highlighted that the various registered investment advisor consolidators in the US now account for US$1.5 trillion in total assets under management.

On the fundraising side, according to KPMG, the sum of total global investment into WealthTech reached US$400 million in 2024.

While the numbers fluctuate, the direction of travel remains clear for now: fundraising endeavours and multiple flavours of M&A across the wealth management sector will continue. The wealth management industry is attractive to investors for multiple reasons, including:

  • Long-term growth opportunity/client demand
  • Recurring and predictable revenues
  • Market fragmentation
  • Strong valuations and exit potentials
  • The need for technology adoption across the landscape
  • Growing regulatory and other pressures favouring larger firms
  • Continued growth in global wealth
